Blackline Live Europe Cloud Services and Domain

Updated on June 24, 2022

This article applies to customers identified by Blackline Safety as having operations in Europe, Africa, India, and the Middle East. All customers with operations outside of those areas are not affected by this service change.

This article contains the following sections:

Introduction

As part of Blackline Safety’s ongoing efforts to help our European customers meet their General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requirements, on 25 June 2022 (24 June 2022 in North America) we will be launching a new Blackline Live domain, https://eu.live.blacklinesafety.com, along with European Cloud services for Blackline Live and Blackline Analytics. This will allow our European customers’ GDPR-regulated data to not only be stored in Europe, but also fully processed in Europe.

A year ago, as an initial effort to help provide personally identifiable information (PII) protection required by GDPR, we began removing our European customers’ PII from Blackline Live after 7 days and storing their long-term data in Europe and Canada.

Our European Cloud services and new Blackline Live domain represent a much more comprehensive solution to our European customers’ data residency requirements by processing and storing their PII, transactional, and long-term data entirely within European borders.

What this means for your organisations

With the Europe Blackline Live domain and Cloud services, your data will be processed and stored entirely within Europe. This is important for three reasons:

  1. 1. It removes your data from U.S. facilities.
  2. 2. It provides another measure for your company to meet its GDPR obligations around the protection and containment of PII within European borders.
  3. 3. It provides more event history. You will be able to view data for the previous 200 days as we will no longer need to remove that data after 7 days.

If your company has identified that you have GDPR requirements, your organisations will be moved to the new domain and Cloud services automatically. Additionally, if your company has indicated that they would like to be moved to our European Cloud services, your organisations will be moved.

If you are not sure or wish to discuss whether your organisations should be moved, or if your company has operations both inside and outside Europe, please contact your CSM or Customer Care to discuss how you would like us to manage your organisations.

North America

United Kingdom & Europe

What this means for you

For customers whose organisations are moving, European Cloud services will launch on 25 June 2022 (evening of 24 June 2022 in North America).

This transition will have minimal impact on your Blackline Live experience. There will be no change to your Blackline Live account username and password, nor any need to reapply Blackline Live account settings or details; your account will be moved over in its entirety.

The changes you will notice are as follows:

CONNECT API AND PUSH NOTIFICATION CHANGES

If you use our Connect API or Push notification and you will be using the Europe domain, your details (including push endpoints and client ID/secret) will remain unchanged.

Connect API customers must update your integrations to send PUT, POST and GET requests as follows. These updates can be done now and must be updated before 25 June, 03:00 CEST (24 June, 19:00 MDT):

  • The prefix for all Connect API resource URLs, regardless of command, has been updated to https://eu.connect-live.blacklinesafety.com/1/. Suffixes to this URL remain unchanged and depend on the command in use.

For example, for ‘PUT alert/:id’ requests must be updated to https://eu.connect-live.blacklinesafety.com/1/alert/:id.

Push notification customers do not need to make changes unless your integration specifically uses the Blackline Live URL as a heading on your system. This can be updated with the new domain now, and must be updated before 25 June, 03:00 CEST (24 June, 19:00 MDT).

All other Connect API and Push notification customers (North America and Rest of World) will be unaffected by this transition and should continue to use https://live.blacklinesafety.com.

What you can do to prepare

To prepare for the transition to our European Cloud services, you can take the following actions:

  • Make sure all Blackline Live account users in your company are aware of the change.
  • If you make use of our Push notification or Connect API functions (or those monitored by a third party outside of Blackline Safety), forward this information to your service providers so they can make integration updates.
  • Start using the new domain now and update your Blackline Live bookmarks.

Now would also be a good time to review your Blackline Live organisations to ensure they are up-to-date and accurate, including:

  • Updating your team member list.
  • Ensuring devices are assigned to the correct users (where applicable).
  • Ensuring devices are placed in the correct alert and configuration profiles.

For information on how to review and update your Blackline Live organisations, see Maintaining your Blackline Live Organization Quick Reference.

Blackline Live Planned Outage

To allow us to transition organisations to the new Europe domain, Blackline Live will experience a brief, planned outage on 25 June at 03:00 CEST (24 June at 19:00 MDT). During this outage, you may notice the following:

  • Access to Blackline Live may be limited or temporarily unavailable.
  • Certain system functionality may be temporarily unavailable.
  • Alerts may be delayed.

Our technical teams will work hard to minimize the time and impact to you. Our current estimate is that services will be affected for approximately 30 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

GENERAL

When do I start using the Blackline Live Europe domain?

You can start using https://eu.live.blacklinesafety.com now. On 25 June, customers whose organisations have been identified for transfer to the Europe domain will see their device traffic and data processing cutover to our Europe Cloud services automatically.

What changes do I need to be aware of?

The most significant change will be the URL you use to sign in to Blackline Live. Instead of https://live.blacklinesafety.com, you will sign in to https://eu.live.blacklinesafety.com.

If you have APIs, you may also see some changes. Please see our API FAQs below.

Will I use the same username and password?

Yes, you will be able to sign in to your account at https://eu.live.blacklinesafety.com using the same username (email) and password you used before. You will be prompted to change your password every 90 days.

What happens during the cutover to the new domain?

On 25 June at 03:00 CEST (24 June at 19:00 MDT), there will be a scheduled outage where devices will not be connected to Blackline Live and alerts will not be processed. The outage will last approximately 30 minutes.

What happens to alarms and alerts that occur during the cutover outage?

These device events will appear in your Blackline Live organisations once your organisations are activated in the European domain.

Will all my organisations, relationships, groups, users, devices, configurations, profiles, etc., be the same as they were before the change?

Yes, your entire account configuration will be intact. You should not see any differences when you sign in to https://eu.live.blacklinesafety.com.

Will my data stay within European boundaries (GDPR)?

Yes, all your data will be processed and saved completely within Europe.

As a European customer my personally identifiable information (PII) is currently removed from the U.S. domain after 7 days. Will this continue in the European domain?

Once the cutover happens, we will begin saving Blackline Live data in Europe for 200 days and will no longer remove PII data after 7 days. The data storage in the Europe domain will begin incrementing after the cutover on 25 June. By 11 January 2023, organisations in the European domain will have a full history in Blackline Live.

Will my Blackline Analytics reports be available in the European domain?

Yes, all your historical data will be available in the European domain, and your Blackline Analytics reports will use that data for your reports.

Analytics reports will be confined to data within your Cloud service. European Blackline Analytics reports will contain only data stored in Europe and all other Blackline Analytics reports will contain only data stored in the U.S.

Can I access my data from outside the European boundaries?

Yes. Access to your data is controlled and limited by your user profiles. You can sign in to your organisation from anywhere you have an internet connection, provided you have Blackline Live credentials.

My devices are monitored by the Safety Operations Centre (SOC) in Canada. What happens when my organisations are moved to the European domain?

The SOC will have a European-based facility from which all monitored European/Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) customers will be connected.

My devices are monitored by Blackline Safety in Europe. Will there be any changes?

Your monitoring services will remain the same, but your event traffic (alarms and alerts) will be processed in Europe instead of the U.S. You should not notice any differences as a result of the change.

CUSTOMERS WITH OPERATIONS INSIDE AND OUTSIDE EUROPE

Does this apply to non-Europe based companies?

We will be transitioning European clients to our European Cloud services and domain automatically. We will also be moving many of our customers based in Africa, India, and the Middle East to the European Cloud services and domain.

If your company has Blackline Safety devices in these regions, the Blackline Live organisations associated with those devices will be moved to the European Cloud services and domain, https://eu.live.blacklinesafety.com, and activated on 25 June 2022.

If you are outside Europe, Africa, India, or the Middle East, this move does not affect you.

Please note that our cutover outage (30 minutes) will affect all users globally, regardless of whether your organisations are moving.

What can I do if I want my organisations to remain in the current U.S. Cloud services and domain?

Contact your Customer Care or Client Success representative (see contact information below).

Can I have organisations in both domains?

According to GDPR, your European operations must have their data reside within European borders, so your European organisations should be in the Europe domain, https://eu.live.blacklinesafety.com. If you have operations outside European borders, they can reside in either domain.

You can request to have all your organisations in either location, but if you choose the U.S. domain, https://live.blacklinesafety.com, you will need to provide explicit acknowledgement you are aware and approve of your European organisations being housed outside European borders.

If I have organisations in both domains, can I manage them all from one sign in?

No, you cannot. You will have to sign in to https://live.blacklinesafety.com for your organisations outside Europe, and https://eu.live.blacklinesafety.com to manage your European and GCC organisations.

Once both domains are working how/where do I create new organisations?

Prior to the cutover, you can create new organisations as you have in the past.

After the cutover on 25 June at 03:00 CEST (24 June at 19:00 MDT), there will be separate organisation registration pages for each domain.

IMPORTANT: Once you create an organisation in a domain, you cannot move it to another domain.

If I have organisations in both domains and I am signed in to both at the same time, is there a way to tell which one I’m looking at?

Yes, you can tell which domain you are signed in to by looking at the banner and the menu bar at the top of the screen. The U.S. domain, https://live.blacklinesafety.com, has a blue information banner and U.S. in the menu bar and the European domain, https://eu.live.blacklinesafety.com, has a grey information banner and EUR in the menu bar.

API CUSTOMERS

I use APIs to receive alerts and provide assistance using the CONNECT API. Does anything change for me?

Push notification customers do not need to make changes unless your integration specifically uses the Blackline Live URL as a heading on your system. This can be updated with the new domain now, and must be updated before 25 June, 3 am CEST (24 June, 7 pm MDT).

There are no other changes required. Tokens and authentication schemes remain unchanged for the Europe domain.

LONER MOBILE CUSTOMERS

How does this affect Loner Mobile app users?
